Administrative / biographical background:

The Rural Development Department was established in 1975 and brought together policy work on development in rural areas, such as the use of renewable natural resources, farmers co-operatives and so on, and relations with the international bodies interested in this field (principally the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the consultative Group on Food Production). The department was short-lived, however, being abolished in 1976, at which time most of its responsibilities were absorbed by a new FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organisation) Department.
