The series comprises files on the administration of the order. The current statutes provide that the ordinary members shall have performed high or confidential service overseas, and that the Secretary to the Order shall be the person for the time being holding the office of Permanent Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. The statutes also provide that the dean shall be the person holding for the time being the office of Dean of the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul in London and the south west chapel of the cathedral is at the disposal of the order. |

King George III created and constituted this order of knighthood by letters patent in the year 1818; the statutes were revised in 1850, and have been considerably further revised at various times during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The statutes provide for three principal classes of members and for overall limits to the numbers in each of these three classes, for officers, for additional members invested for certain specific past events, and for honorary membership for citizens outside the Sovereign's realms. |
