Administrative / biographical background:

The Finance Department handled the provision of funds for expenditure by the Diplomatic Service at home and overseas, and control and supervision of the various votes accounted for by the head of the service, including the vote for the grant-in-aid of the British Council.

On the formation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 1968, the Diplomatic Service Administration Office was abolished, and the functions of the Finance Department passed directly to the new office. The work of the department passed to a Resource and Finance Department in 1992.
