Description:

This series contains confidential reports prepared for the Board between 1880 and 1892, 1896 & 1907 on endowed schools in the London area, charities administered by the Corporation of Trinity House and charities of the City and County of the City of Norwich.

The reports add to information in the original reports of the Commissioners for Inquiring Concerning Charities which were published 1817-1843 and differ from the published Assistant Commissioner reports (1893-1914) in the contentious nature of their subject matter.

CHAR 15/1 is indexed at the front in manuscript and its cover is erroneously titled Charity Commission Annual Reports, 1886 - 1892

Administrative / biographical background:

The Charitable Trusts Act 1853, Endowed Schools Act 1869 and the Municipal corporations Act 1883 empowered the Board of Charity Commissioners to appoint inspectors (known as assistant commissioners after 1887) to inquire into the affairs of endowed charities and schools, and to provide reports on their findings.
