The Royal Commission on the Reform of the House of Lords was set up in February 1999 under the Chairmanship of Lord Wakeham, to make recommendations about the role, functions and composition of the House of Lords. Its work followed the government's action to end the automatic right of hereditary peers to sit and vote in the House of Lords. The commission invited submissions and arranged public hearings around the United Kingdom in order to gather local opinion. Its report was published in January 2000. |
