| Administrative / biographical background: |
Robert Ross (b 1912) was the first member of the Department to specialise in diatoms. He studied in Cambridge, and was appointed as an Assistant, 2nd class, in October 1936, being promoted to Senior Scientific Officer in 1946 and Principal in 1950. He became Deputy Keeper in 1962, and remained Head of the Section until 1966, when he was appointed Keeper. Ross was assisted from 1951 by Patricia Sims. Prior to 1936 diatoms were part of the Alga Section, under the care of Gepp and then Tandy. |
