The National Economy (General) sub-group (NE(G) was established in January 1970 as a result of the Treasury reorganisation on the dissolution of the Department of Economic Affairs. It came under the re-created National Economy Group which became one of three main policy groups in the Treasury.

The remit of NE(G) changed in the 4-5 years of its existence, but broadly covered the following functions: economic briefings, medium term outlook and co-ordination of long-term strategy; Government support for economic research, including academic applied research; economic advice on education, health, social security, regional policy, defence, housing and the nationalised industries.
