Title: | Ordnance Survey of England and Wales: Six-Inch Maps |
Description: |
The maps in this series are six-inch maps of England and Wales prepared by the Ordnance Survey. The sheets are from various editions, spanning the period 1880 to 1968, both provisional and definitive issues; in some cases, partial sheets of later editions are affixed to sheets earlier editions, but according to no systematic pattern. The set is incomplete. Some sheets contain National Grid information. The material in this series is non record material originally held in the Library. |
Date: | 1880-1968 |
Arrangement: |
An index sheet showing the civil parishes and the Ordnance Survey maps of each county, together with detached sheets of adjoining counties, is usually included in the first volume for each county. Readers who do not find a sheet where it might be expected among the county sheets should examine the volumes for the appropriate adjoining county: most index sheets have undated MS additions indicating the neighbouring county sheets that have been included. |

Custodial history: | These maps were collected in the House of Commons Library, probably between 1900 and 1968 to judge from the dates of the maps themselves, and transferred to the Public Record Office in Chancery Lane in 1969. On consolidation of the Chancery Lane and Kew Library holdings at Kew, in 1996, they were listed and placed on open access shelves in the Map and Large Document Reading Room. |
