Administrative / biographical background:

The Committee on Medical Aspects of Food and Nutrition Policy (COMA) was set up in 1992 when its secretariat function was assigned to a branch - HEF (A) 4 - within the Department of Health division, Health Aspects of the Environment and Food.

COMA was largely replaced in 2001 by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN). SACN's establishment coincided with the setting up of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and the consequent need to review previous arrangements. COMA's work on novel foods was taken on by the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP), part of the Food Standards Agency.
