Details of WO 23
Reference: WO 23
Title: Royal Hospital Chelsea: Admission Books, Registers and Papers
Description:

The records in this series consist of registers, admission books, ledgers etc relating to army pensioners and the payment of pensions. Most, but by no means all, relate to pensions payable by the Commissioners of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, to either in-pensioners or out-pensioners

These class books give details by regiment of current pensioners, ages, lengths of service, dates of admission, complaints on admission, and places of current residence.

Date: 1702-1933
Arrangement:

The records in this series have been arranged in four sections: out-pensioners, in-pensioners, officers and civilian employees.

In each section the records have been listed chronologically, not numerically by piece, although many parts overlap. Parts relating to particular categories such as foreign and colonial forces and ordnance troops are listed after the general parts. The volumes themselves are arranged in a number of different ways: alphabetically by name; by regiment; by rate or type of payment; and, often, by a mixture of all three.
