Administrative / biographical background:

The awards were made by Assistant Commissioners appointed by the Tithe Commissioners under the Tithe Acts 1839 (2 & 3 Vict. c.62 ss. 34-36) and 1840 (3 & 4 Vict. c. 15 s.28) to ascertain and define ancient boundaries or to draw new boundaries between parishes or townships, in order to resolve disputes between landowners.
