One of the functions of the Ceremonial Branch is to determine the number and types of award ('scales') from the Sovereign which may be available, in a prescribed period, to the armed forces and others operating both in relation to military activities or during peacetime. Awards may relate to either operational or non-operational service, under criteria appropriate to the circumstances, and taking into account the total numbers involved in the activity or theatre of war under consideration.
