Administrative / biographical background:

The Advisory Committee on Government Advertising was set up in 1917 by the Treasury in order to advise the Controller of the Stationery Office on the possibility of putting advertisements in government publications. The Committee was chaired by Sir George Riddell and the Secretary provided by the Stationery Office.
