Administrative / biographical background:

The London and Windsor Railway was a proposed line between Windsor (commencing in Victoria Street opposite Bachelors Acre) and London (terminating at the corner of Brompton Road and Knightsbridge). Its route would have been via Old Windsor, Staines, Hounslow, Brentford, Chiswick and Hammersmith and would have been 21.5 miles in length. The scheme met with a considerable amount of opposition and the bill did not make its way through parliament.
