Administrative / biographical background:

Defence Policy, Materiel and Aircraft Division was created in 1981 under the Defence Policy and Materiel Group and thereunder the HM Treasury's Public Service Sector. Its staff complement was originally an Assistant Secretary, Principal (Defence policy), Principal (Army policy), Principal (Royal Navy policy) and Principal (aircraft industry). Under the Defence Policy and Materiel Group, it had a sibling division entitled the Defence Materiel (Pay, Miscellaneous Services) Division of whose records have not been selected for preservation. The Division is known to have existed to 1990.
