Custodial history: | The diaries came into the possession of Commander C R Thompson, who was personal assistant to the Minister of Defence. The diaries were returned to official custody by Commander Thompson's godson, Simon W Thompson, who deposited them with the Treasury Solicitor. |

Commander Charles Ralfe Thompson, RN (1894-1966) was personal assistant to the Minister of Defence from 1940 to 1945. During this period, the office of Minister of Defence was held by the Prime Minister, and Thompson organised and accompanied Churchill on all his official journeys until Churchill left office in July 1945. |
