Description:

Medical and surgical journal of HMS Acorn for 16 November 1858 to 31 December 1859 by William E O'Brien, during which time the said ship was employed in China.

Folios 1-2: Robert Dowling, aged 24, able seaman; case number 1; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 16 November 1858 (had been on the sick list prior to Surgeon O'Brien joining the ship). Discharged 10 January 1859 to duty.

Folio 2: Robert Dowling, aged 24, able seaman; case number 2; disease or hurt, debility. Put on sick list, 11 March 1859. Discharged 11 March 1859 to the hospital at Hong Kong by the mail steamer Shanghai. Died in the hospital.

Folio 2: Edward Pyle, aged 28, quartermaster; case number 3; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 24 November 1858. Discharged 28 December 1858 to duty.

Folio 3: George Payne, aged 20, ordinary seaman; case number 4; disease or hurt, wound, loss of eye as a result from a kick of a horse. Put on sick list, 2 December 1858. Discharged 29 December 1858 to duty.

Folios 3-5: Matthew Ball, aged 40, painter; case number 5; disease or hurt, hepatitis. Put on sick list, 6 December 1858. Died 8 March 1859.

Folio 5: John Hill, aged 24, carpenter's mate; case number 6; disease or hurt, bubo. Put on sick list, 1 December 1858. Discharged 24 December 1858.

Folios 5-6: John Hill, aged 24, carpenter's mate; case number 7; disease or hurt, phlegmon. Put on sick list, 8 January 1859. Discharged 11 March 1859.

Folio 6: Benjamin Creedy, aged 39, able seaman; case number 8; disease or hurt, ruptured heart. Put on sick list, 17 March 1859. Died 17 March 1859.

Folios 6-7: Philip Roland, aged 27, able seaman; case number 9; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 10 April 1859. Died 1 July 1859.

Folios 7-8: Peter Creed, aged 39, captain of the afterguard; case number 10; disease or hurt, haemoptysis. Put on sick list, 22 May 1859. Discharged 11 March 1859 to the hospital at Hong Kong by the mail steamer Shanghai. Died in the hospital.

Folio 8: John Friend, aged 27, ropemaker; case number 11; disease or hurt, dysenteric diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 9 July 1859. Discharged 18 July 1859 to the hospital at Hong Kong by the mail steamer.

Folios 8-9: James Adams, aged 20, ordinary seaman; case number 12; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 10 July 1859. Discharged 18 July 1859 to the hospital at Hong Kong by the mail steamer.

Folios 9-10: John Gill, aged 25, leading seaman; case number 13; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 17 July 1859. Died 23 July 1859.

Folio 10: Charles Hamilton, aged 28, able seaman; case number 14; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 13 July 1859. Discharged 14 August 1859 cured.

Folio 11: Edward Pyle, aged 29, quartermaster; case number 15; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 20 June 1859. Discharged 6 September 1859 to the hospital.

Folio 11: Thomas Walton, aged 21, ordinary seaman; case number 16; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 14 August 1859. Discharged 8 October 1859 to the hospital at Hong Kong.

Folios 12-13: William Roper, aged 21, ordinary seaman; case number 17; disease or hurt, fracture of thigh. Put on sick list, 13 July 1859. 30 December 1859 still recovering.

Folio 13: Thomas Havling, aged 22, able seaman; case number 18; disease or hurt, contusion resulting from a fall from the rigging. Put on sick list, 24 November 1858. 31 December 1859 still recovering.
