Administrative / biographical background:

The publication of journals was begun by the Post Office Savings Department in November 1932, for the purpose of disseminating background information on savings topics, headquarters organisation etc, to officers employed at post office counters and other persons whose work or interest included national savings.

A Post Office Savings Bulletin was issued three times a year until the outbreak of the 1939-1945 war. The practice of publishing a journal then lapsed until September 1961 when 'The Key' was introduced. This remained in circulation until 1971.

From May 1972 until June 1980 the Department for National Savings produced its own house newspaper, 'DNS News', to keep staff fully informed of progress and developments within the department. In November 1988 the newspaper was reissued a under new title. 'The News'. Since September 1975 the department has published a newspaper, 'Keypoints', directed at Post Office counter staff. The paper's objective is to assist counter staff in conducting National Savings business efficiently.
