Administrative / biographical background:

The Chief Scientific Advisory Group was established in 1964 to advise the ministry on any transport problem with a scientific context.

The group was headed by Chief Scientific Adviser who reported to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport. In 1970, the group was incorporated into the Dir ectorate of Scientific Studies. In 1972, this Directorate was renamed the Directorate of Research Requirements within the Planning and Transportation Unit.
