Administrative / biographical background:

Great House Experimental Husbandry Farm was a high-lying Pennine farm in an industrial area. The director was assisted by a committee which advised on management of the farm, and also instigated experimental work which could not be ordinarily undertaken on a farm. The main farming and experimental activities were grassland production and utilisation, and the feeding and management of cattle, sheep and pigs. The farm consisted of about 350 acres when taken over by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in May 1951; and in 1956 Buckden Farms nearby were leased from the National Trust until 1980. The farm contained livestock (sheep and cattle, and later poultry and pigs), some grassland and woodland. Great House Experimental Husbandry Farm was closed in 1982.
