The work on proposals to nationalise parts of the food industry was undertaken after the publication in April 1949 of the policy document Labour believes in Britain, which included the intention of taking the sugar industry and the meat trade and cold storage industry into public ownership. The change of government in 1951 brought about a reversal of the outgoing government's plans for nationalisation. |
