By virtue of its superior jurisdiction King's Bench was entitled to hear proceedings on writs alleging error in the Irish courts in Dublin; from King's Bench itself error then lay to the House of Lords. The records of its Irish jurisdiction from 1737 are found here. In 1783, by 23 Geo III c28, s2, the King's Bench jurisdiction in error over Irish courts was abolished and such records cease. The remaining records are proceedings in the House of Lords on allegations of error in King's Bench. Writs of error were abolished in 1852 by 15 & 16 Vict c76, s 148, when proceedings in error became a 'step in the cause' rather than separate action in its own right, and jurisdiction in error was finally abolished in 1875 (36 & 37 Vict c 66, sch 1, ord. 49), having already been replaced by the creation of a system of appeals. |
