Description:

Report of J Bayley on 1 individual petition (the Hon Edward Monckton) on behalf of Benjamin Warren, journeyman carpenter, convicted at the Lent Staffordshire Assizes held in 1813 for the theft of end of an oak plank, value 2/6, property of Lord Bradford, his employer. There are letters from the Hon Edward Monckton and John Grove and a certificate of good character from John Harris, keeper of the gaol for the County of Stafford, countersigned by Lord Bradford. Grounds for clemency: the judge had indicated that he would report favourably on a petition lodged after 12 months' had been served. Initial sentence: 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour. Recommendation: mercy. Annotated: 'To be released on the condition that some respectable person will undertake to receive him'.

In the report there is mention of Robert Marchant, forger who has been granted a further respite and that the prisoner's friends might not have realised the difference between a respite and a reprieve. See HO 47/53/13, folios 100-107. Folios 94-99.
