Catalogue description Treasury Solicitor: Miscellaneous Papers on Sedition Cases

Official correspondence and other material relating to prosecutions for seditious libel by the Treasury Solicitor. The papers (some formerly part of what is now TS 11) in the main reflect the activities of various societies who were concerned about freedom of speech and parliamentary reform during the 1790s and the second decade of the nineteenth century.

The greater part of the series consists of printed pamphlets and newspapers in which inflammatory and seditious writings appeared, but there are also some in-letters and out-letters of the London Corresponding Society.

Many of the late-eighteenth-century papers, such as printed pamphlets, newspapers, etc, are annotated or endorsed by Edward Lanzun, the King's Messenger responsible for their seizure.

There are also some papers, 1900 to 1901, including a broadsheet, issued in connection with the campaign against the war in South Africa by the Stop-the-War Committee.
