Description: |
Selected historical papers from the 'JOSEF' case, alias Rhubarb: Russian. JOSEF was the only UK-based Double Agent run by the Security Service against the Japanese. A merchant seaman who was deliberately vague about his background, he claimed to be a Communist and former Comintern agent who had previously worked for the Russians in Europe and Latin America. He established contact with Japanese military and naval intelligence in Lisbon as a result of his association with the Japanese honorary Press Attach? in London, interned contemporaneously at the Royal Patriotic Schools in 1941. The case was run by visits by JOSEF to the Japanese in Lisbon and the use of couriers notionally found by him. It lasted until December 1944 |
