Records of the Ministry of Transport's Shipping Divisions, established to meet the civil and military requirements of the military forces at sea, document the supply of shipping, merchant services, food and manpower to meet those needs, and include:
- correspondence and papers of the Transport Department of the Admiralty in MT 23;
- letterbooks of the Transport Department of the Admiralty in MT 31, and journals of convict ships in MT 32;
- correspondence and papers of the Ministry of Shipping, 1917-1921, in MT 25;
- minutes and papers of the Home Trade Transport Control Committee in MT 60;
- papers of the Shipping Divisions after 1938 in MT 59, MT 72 and MT 73;
- and correspondence and papers of the Sea Transport Division in MT 40.
Also included are the records of the Goeland Company in MT 71 and those of the Ambatielos Case in MT 53.
The series includes records of the Board of Trade's Railway Department and Statistics Department whilst they were merged with the Railway and Commercial Departments, which would otherwise be found amongst the records of the Board of Trade (BT).
