HLG 46
Local Government Board and predecessors and successor: General Policy and Procedure, Registered Files (O Series)

This series contains files created by the General Board of Health, the Local Government Act Office of the Home Office and Local Government Board, to which have been added a few papers of the Ministry of Health; and volumes of printed correspondence of the Board compiled in the Ministry of Health for reference purposes. The registration system used for the files is not contemporary, but was created at a later date in the Ministry of Health and retained in the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.

The files cover a wide range of functions relating to local authority administration, including model byelaws, loan sanctions, interest rates, burial grounds, coast protection etc.

The series also includes files from various blocks of the Ministry of Health 90,000 and 92,000 series (HLG 101).

Administrative / biographical background:

This series consists of papers instituted prior to 1919 by the Local Government Board and its predecessors covering a period from 1853-1927. The few papers subsequent to 1919 which are included are continuations of papers commenced before that date.

As in the case of the local authority files in Series H.L.G. 1 to which these files relate, the "O" has been specially included to denote "old papers".
