A high percentage of these reports have been marked "confidential"; "for use of Office and Inspectorate" only; and "limited distribution". In some cases reports were not always passed on to the headmasters, but may not have been widely distributed.

Topics covered include nursery education, services in schools, teaching of various subjects, child development and careers guidance. Reports on individual schools often concentrate on one specific subject.
