Custodial history: The Lord Chancellor's Department Shadow Legal Aid Board created and stored the records from January 1988 to April 1989 whereupon they passed to the Legal Aid Board. In April 2000 the records passed to the Legal Services Commission.

Administrative / biographical background:

A Shadow Legal Aid Board was set up in January1988 to take over the function of legal aid from the Law Society and to prepare for a new body responsible for this function. The official Legal Aid Board was its successor and was created on 1 April 1989. The Board received its powers from the Legal Aid Act 1988. The Shadow Boar was terminated upon the creation of the Legal Services Commission on 1 April 2000 that has continued the function of legal aid to this day.
