Custodial history: The records were created and stored by the Lord Chancellor's Department Shadow Legal Aid Board from 1988 until April 1989, whereupon they were passed to the Legal Aid Board. The records remained in the latter body's custody until April 2000 when they were passed to Legal Services Commission.

Administrative / biographical background:

Various Legal Aid Board departments created and submitted papers for consideration by the Legal Aid Board Committee. The functions of the committee were similar to the board itself: to ensure that its activities were commensurate with the principles of the Legal Aid Act 1988 and to ensure that advice, assistance and representation are available in accordance with this Act and in administering the Act. The meetings took place every month.
