The files within this series were created by the Secretariat: a department set up to undertake the day-to-day administration for the Chairman and members of the Legal Aid Board. Other departments (including the Policy and Legal Department, the Chief Executive's Department and the Finance Department) will have contributed to the contents of these files.

The file prefixes are denoted as follows.

External Committees (EC prefix) which includes records created by the Regional Legal Services Committee, North Eastern Legal Services Committee, North Western Legal Services Committee, South Wales Legal Services Steering Group and the Joint Consultative Committee.

Internal Committees (IC prefix) which includes records created by the Legal Aid Board (code LAB), Management Board (code MB), Information Technology / Project Board code IT), Area Chairmen and Vice Chairmen (code AC), Area Directors' Conference (code ADC), Franchising Project Board / Team (code FR) and Multi Party Actions Project Team (code MPA).

Policy / Task Force Committees (PC prefix) which includes records created by the Multi-Party Actions Committee, Means Assessment Committee, Green orm Working Party, New Roles Committee, Crime Committee, Priorities and Effectiveness Committee, Access Committee, Access Committee, Statistics Committee, Services Committee and the Information Needs Working Party.

Consultation and Research (CON prefix) which includes records created by Advice Agencies, Law Centres, Pilot Schemes, Consultation Papers by various legal aid sections, Court Schemes Projects, Research bodies, Expert Systems Working Party and various Legal Reform projects.

Liaison / Meetings / Conferences (LM prefix) which includes records created by the Legal Aid Board in its dealings with the Law Society, Lord Chancellor's Department, Justice Clerks' Society, Department of Social Security (Preston), Solicitors Family Law Association, the Bar Council, Solicitors Complaints Bureau. Also contained are the records of the Joining Data Committee, Quarterly Reports to the Lord Chancellor's Department, the Community Intepreters Project and Legal Aid Board responses to consultation papers.

Administrative / biographical background:

The Secretariat have three main work streams:Corporate Governance, Equalities, Information Compliance. They work on a daily basis with the Chair and Commission members, managing their annual programme of work. The Secretariat work includes: managing the work of the full Commission; advising on public appointment issues including Committee membership; coordinating responses to Parliamentary Questions about the work of the Commission; producing the Commission's Annual Report to Parliament; advising on the Commission's committee structure; managing the work of the Commission's Audit and Finance and General Purposes Committees; leading responsibility for the Commission's compliance with the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 and other anti-discrimination legislation; taking the lead in meeting the challenges of compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000; creating and coordinating programmes for many of the overseas visitors to the Commission
