Description:

The historical collection, which is housed at the Museum in Hertford House, Manchester Square, London, comprises the following: original (but frequently copies of) letters, receipts and legal documents, mainly dating from the 20th century, relating to subjects in the collection. These relate to provenance, research and conservation. There is also a collection of original, copied and published material relating to the Hertford and Wallace families.

The material may be broadly divided into sections relating to the founders (as individuals and collectors, but also to their associated properties and contemporaries), to the history of the museum (post 1897), and in part to the Trustees and Directors of the Museum.
