Foreign Office, North and East African Department and successors: Registered Files (V and NA Series)
This series contains records of the North and East African Department of the Foreign Office dealing with UK relations with Algeria, Ethiopia, French Somaliland, Libya, Morocco, Somalia, the Sudan, Tunisia, the United Arab Republic and Spanish North Africa between January 1967 and October 1968. From October 1968 the records are of the North African Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, dealing with UK relations with Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia and the United Arab Republic (which reverted to its former name Egypt in September 1971), and Spanish North Africa.
In April 1972 the North African Department was merged with elements of the Near Eastern Department to form the Near East and North Africa Department, and from April to December 1972 the records are those produced by the new department dealing with Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia. Records relating to the Near East continued to use the NE series of the old Near Eastern Department until the end of the year (FCO 17).

Foreign and Commonwealth Office, North African Department, 1968-1972
Foreign Office, North and East African Department, 1962-1968
The North and East African Department of the Foreign Office was abolished upon the creation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 1968. Responsibility for relations with Ethiopia, French Somaliland and Somalia passed to the East African Department; and relations with the other countries were handled by a new North African Department, whose records continue in this series after October 1968.
In 1972 the department was merged into a new Near East and North Africa Department. The new department dealt with relations with Algeria, Egypt, Israel and the Occupied Territories, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Syria and Tunisia, responsibility for Spanish North Africa having passed to the West African Department (FCO 65).
NA file series records relating to Spanish North Africa created between January and April 1972 were re-registered as West African Department files, and there are no files relating to Spanish North Africa for 1972 in this series.
The former Near Eastern Department NE file series continued to be used by the merged department for records relating to Jordan, Lebanon, Israel and the Occupied Territories and Syria for the remainder of 1972, and records produced by the Near East and North Africa Department relating to those states will be found in FCO 17.
