The forces under the command of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) landed in France in June 1944 to liberate enemy occupied Europe and to conquer Germany, although organisation for the invasion began in early 1943. The headquarters of the British 21st Army Group formed the tactical headquarters for the cross channel move and land operations immediately following.
Microfilm was made of the Allied Forces Headquarters (AFHQ) records at the end of the war at the direction of the Combined Chiefs of Staff prior to the distribution of the original records between allied authorities.
