Administrative / biographical background:

The Caird Trust Fund was set up after the death of the National Maritime Museum's benefactor Sir James Caird. It superseded the Sir James Caird Trust Fund which was set up by Sir James in 1942.

James Caird (1854-1954) was a shipowner and a founder of the National Maritime Museum. He financed ship restorations, obtained valuable collections for the museum and made considerable personal donations. He was made baronet in 1928.
