Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Departments, and related bodies: Enclosure Awards
This series comprises enclosure awards and awards of regulation of commons under the Enclosure Acts 1845 to 1899.
The list of awards is arranged in alphabetical order under the appropriate county. The name of the common or parish in which the land to be enclosed lay is given, together with the date, month and year of each award. Usually, the related map is bound up with the award. Where two awards for the same parish or common occur, they have been allotted separate piece numbers.
Board of Agriculture and Fisheries, 1903-1919
Copyhold, Inclosure and Tithe Commission, 1851-1882
Land Commissioners for England, 1882-1889
Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, 1919-1955
The standing Inclosure Commission was appointed to work through assistant Inclosure Commissioners and Surveyors. They were to carry out local enquiries in each case of the proposed enclosure and if the enclosure were sanctioned by parliament on the commission's recommendations, they were to be responsible for the actual work of enclosure and allotment.
