Description:

Folios 1-2: case no 1, James Lockington, aged 3, pensioner's daughter, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, dysenteria, came on board in a state of extreme distress; the father previous to embarkation imprisoned for debt whilst on shore, it is said that the child had suffered from an affection of the bowels which has reduced it considerably, and in the last two days purging. The child was extremely emaciated and has the appearance of being only half the reputed age; put on sick list 17 July 1847, died 22 July 1847 at 8 am.

Folio 2: case no 2, Patrick Carthy, aged 4, pensioner's son, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, marasmus, stated by his parents that the child was wasting rapidly for sometime previous, but without any apparent disease. The wasting more rapid since embarkation but within the last week the child lost all appetite, now suffering from frequent purging, quite pallid, eyes deeply sunk, abdomen placid and contracted; put on sick list 17 July 1847, died 21 July 1847.

Folio 3: case no 3, William M Butler, aged 1, [pensioner's son], taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea, the mother of this child convalescent from a severe attack of typhus and as she was suckling her child he has during the last fortnight been deprived of his usual nourishment, restless with increased heat of skin and frequent pulse, bowels reported regular and stools natural; put on sick list 21 July 1847, died 6 August 1847.

Folios 3-4: case no 4, Dennis McCarthy, aged 42, pensioner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, fistula in anophthisis, pain and swelling in the perineum on the left side of the anus, no fluctuation discovered, but there is considerable thickening and inflammation of the surrounding parts; put on sick list 21 July 1847, sent 13 October 1847 to Colonial hospital at Auckland, New Zealand.

Folio 5: case no 5, Eliza Dwyer, aged 20 months, pensioner's daughter, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, marasmus, the mother of the child states that it has totally lost its appetite and rapidly wasting, the bowels very irritable, skin hot and dry, pulse frequent, the child constantly picking the worse; put on sick list 22 July 1847, died 10 August 1847 at 11:45.

Folios 5-6: case no 6, Philip Doyne, aged 3, pensioner's son, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea, this child is stated to have wasted considerably since embarkation, now looks pallid with contracts shape features, pulse frequent, skin hot and dry, tongue red, abdomen tumid, bowels irritable; put on sick list 26 July 1847, died 16 September 1847 at 6 am.

Folios 6-7: case no 7, Samuel Medstone, aged 43, pensioner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, asthma, costiveness with severe griping pains of the abdomen, general depression and uneasiness with dyspnoea, was subject to severe attacks of spasmodic asthma; put on sick list 27 July 1847, died 1 August 1847 at about 11:30.

Folio 7: case no 8, Captain Macdonald's infant, aged 9 days, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea, Mrs Macdonald was seized with labour pains on the evening of the 6th August and after was delivered of a female child at 3 pm. the child is exceedingly small and delicate, being not larger than a seven months child. Mrs Macdonald was a constant and severe sufferer from seasickness until the time of delivery. On the 4th August [1847] the infant now ceased with diarrhoea and refuses to take the breast - a little castor oil to be given; put on sick list 7 August 1847, died 16 August 1847 at 12:30.

Folio 8: case no 9, Mary McCarthy, aged 1 ¾, pensioner's daughter, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diarrhoea, a feeble child has frequent purging of watery stools; put on sick list 8 August 1847, died 22 August 1847 at 6:30 pm.

Folios 8-9: case no 10, John Casey, aged 6, pensioner's son, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, febris typhus, complains of having suffered during the night from frequent rigors and restlessness; put on sick list 10 August 1847, died 19 August 1847 at 2:30 am.

Folios 9-10: case no 11, Mrs Medstone, aged 36, pensioner's wife, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, febris typhus, the woman whose husband died on the 1st inst (case 7) has continued from that period in a state of great mental depression approaching to imbecility of mind, accompanied with a disinclination to exertion, but without any symptoms of bodily disease. She was suddenly seized with syncope the pulse very feeble and skin densed with perspiration; put on sick list 14 August 1847, died 22 August 1847 at 2 pm.

Folio 11: case no 12, Mrs Roche, aged 37, pensioner's wife, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, febris typhus, she has enjoyed good health during the voyage, complains of general uneasiness and pains of the head and limbs with frequent rigors, pulse rather frequent but soft, skin cool, tongue coated in the centre, bowels regular; put on sick list 3 September 1847, died 16 September 1847 at 11:30 am.

Folios12 & 14: case no 13, Patrick Evers, aged 45, pensioner Serjeant, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, rheumatismus; put on sick list 5 September 1847, sent 30 October 1847 to Colonial hospital.
