Kendal Parks Estate 1761-1785

 

Lease, 24 December 1761.

 

1. Isaac Wilson, dyer, Edward Harrison, cordwainer, and Thomas Crewdson, hosier, all of Kendal (trustees of messuages, lands and hereditaments hereinafter mentioned by virtue of will of Bryan Lancaster, deceased). 1761

 

2. Richard Blades of Kendal, husbandman.

 

Premises: all that messuage and tenement or farm with barns, stables, and other outhouses, gardens, orchards, etc. called or situate at Parks in Kendal Parks near Kendal, heretofore estate of Bryan Lancaster and now in possession of executors of George Ellerton, deceased as farmer.

 

Covenants include: (2) to maintain hedges, walls, gates, rails and fences, and the thatch and glass windows in good repair

 

(2) shall not plough, dig or break out of ley any part of the three closes called the High Pastures, nor of close called Neddywife Close, nor plough, crop or sow more of said premises demised than he can sufficiently manure once in the three year term, nor set potatoes on more than 1 rood in any one year; etc.

 

Term: 3 years.

 

Rent: £69 10s. yearly.

Lot 2: Footgate Close containing 2 acres customary measure and of yearly apportioned Lords rent of 10s. - sold to James Shaw for £154.

 

Lot 3: Close called Woodcockhill containing 3 acres 16 perches customary measure and of yearly apportioned Lords rent of 15s. - sold to James Ashburner for £200.

 

Lot 4: Haverbrack Close and Miller Mire containing 6 acres 1 rood 13 perches customary measure and of yearly apportioned Lords rent of £1 1s. - sold to John Richardson for £442 15s.

 

Lot 5: close called Potter Tarn containing 6 acres 1 rood 25 perches customary measure and of yearly apportioned Lords rent of £1 2s. - sold to Richard Sleddall for £402 10s.

Lot 3: closes called Little Lound and Burnhouse Close containing together 6 acres 2 perches customary measure with usual and accustomed road on all necessary occasions through inclosure called Stripes to and from said premises and subject to usual and accustomed road through Little Lound to and from Long Lound, and of yearly apportioned Lords rent of 17s. - sold to Thomas Gibson for £326.

Lot 5: closes Bullmire and Stripes containing together 7 acres 1 rood 32 perches customary measure and subject to road through Stripes, and of yearly apportioned Lords rent of 16s. - sold to Reverend John Wilson and Henry Wilkinson for £362 10s.

 

Lot 6: closes called Spindlewoods containing 33 acres 3 roods 20 perches customary measure and of yearly apportioned Lords rent of £1 1s. - sold to Richard Wilson for £370 10s.

 

Contracts of sale, 12 September 1766 by Thomas Holme, esq., James Dowker and Benjamin Hall of Castle Green Farm and several closes, all parcel of Kendal Castle Estate lying near Kendal, in several lots.

Lot 6: The Tram Close containing 3 roods 30 perches customary measure now in farm to said Joseph Craven and of yearly apportioned Lords rent of 4s. - sold to Edward Harrison for £55.

 

Lot 7: Bank Close containing 3 roods 1 perch customary measure now in farm to said Joseph Craven and of yearly apportioned Lords rent of 3s. - sold to John Shaw for £38 5s.

 

Contract of sale, 19 September 1766, by Thomas Holme, esq., James Dowker and Benjamin Hall to Thomas Atkinson of Kendal, mercer and Richard Wilson of Helsington Laiths, gent.

 

Premises: all that messuage and tenement or farm with all lands grounds and appurts. called the Parks lying near Kendal now in farm to Richard Smeddal [sic] and of yearly Lords rent of £4 4s.

 

Consideration: £1800 - to be paid on 13 February 1768.

Conditions for letting, 27 November 1775, walling at Parks [in Kendal Parks near Kendal], by Isaac Wilson, Edward Harrison and Thomas Crewdson; let in 9 separate lots to William Holme, Michael Carradus, Henry Leck, Myles Halhead, Wm. Barrow and John Harker; "... all the Walling is lett by the Rood 6½ Yard to the Rood to be 3 Foot 2 Inch Broad at the Bottom & well Throughed with Two Rows of Throughs to be well Camed & Cobbled & no Stones to be sett on Edge in any of the Walls nor any of the through Stone to project on the out side & to leave the Soil that comes out of the Foundation of the Walls in our Fields and as clear from Stone as Possable all the Walls to be 16 Inch at the Top under the Cam." [with further details and specifications lot by lot]. 1775.

 

Agreement, 10 February 1776, between (1) Thomas Beck (undertenant of Richard Blades for Parks near Kendal) and Miles Scales of Lambrigg gents and (2) Isaac Wilson, Edward Harrison and Thomas Crewdson (with consent of Richard Blades) about securing payment of £70 rent for Parks and ascertaining terms upon which premises at Parks be held for last year of lease.

Lot 3: close called Round Hill (10a. 1r. 21p.) - to John Willan of Kendal, maltster, for 8 years at £17 yearly. 1776.

Lot 10: Close called High Park (9a. 2r. 33p.) and right of way from turnpike road there into, through and over close adjoining called Far Highfield to High Park - to Miles Scales of Lambrigg, gent for 8 years at £7 10s. yearly.

 

Lot 11: all that barn and cowhouse with appurts. on north side of turnpike road from Kendal to Sedbergh - to Thomas Craven of Kendal yeoman for 9 years at £3 3s. yearly.

 

Lot 12: all that dwelling house with outhouses, garden and fold on south side of turnpike road from Kendal to Sedbergh - to John Willan of Kendal, maltster, for 9 years at £2 14s. yearly.

 

Lease, 31 January 1778.

 

1. Isaac Wilson of Kendal, shearman dyer, Edward Harrison of Kendal, yeoman and Thomas Crewdson of Kendal, lincey weaver.

 

2. Henry Mackereth of Kendal, butcher.

 

Premises: all that close with appurts. called Far High Field containing 8 acres 2 roods 28 perches part of estate called Parks in Kendal Parks and now in possession of (2) as tenant of (1) reserving to (1) a right of way from turnpike road into, over and through close to and from close called High Park).

 

Term: 8 years.

 

Rent: £7 7s. 6d. yearly.

Conditions for letting, 26 October 1785, for 9 years by Thomas Crewdson of Kendal, hosier, John Wilson of Kendal, shearmandyer, and George Benson of Kendal, grocer: all that messuage and tenement called Parks Estate in Kendal Parks and containing 63 acres of ground to be let in 11 lots, viz. Lot 1 Milking Green, Lot 2 Barn Close, Lot 3 Roundhills, Lot 4 Bull Close, Lot 5 Hollow Meadow, Lot 6 Burton Close, Lot 7 Burton Wife Close, Lot 8 High Field, Lot 9 Far High Field, Lot 10 High Park, Lot 11 barn and cowhouse.

 

Lots 1 and 3: to Edward Willan at £22 5s. yearly.

 

Lot 2: to Hoggarth Harker at £20 5s. yearly.

 

Lots 4 and 7: to James Richardson at £12 10s. yearly.

 

Lots 5, 9 and 10: to John Dickinson at £22 17s. yearly.

 

Lot 6: to Lancelot Earl at £5 1s.

 

Lot 8: to John Mattinson at £6 1s. yearly.

 

Lot 11: to Hoggarth Harker at £3 8s. yearly.

Miscellaneous documents

 

- memorandum of bequests made by person unnamed [Bryan Lancaster] - several messuages, houses, lands, and tenements, and also certain close lately purchased of John Harrison and Edward Harrison of Poolbank, Robert Wilson, alderman in Kendal and Bryan Moore of Firrbank, being all within Kendal Park, commonly called High Park or Wilkinson's Close to pass (if grandson dies without issue) to friends William Wilson, Thom[a]s Ellwood junr. and John Wilson in trust to pay to nephew Joseph Pape £100 out of issues and yearly mean profits also to nephew Saml. Pape, the other surviving son of testator's sister Mary Pape £100, and to neice Hannah Fallowfield daughter of said late sister £100 - or in each case to their lawful issue.

 

Subscriptions: [in different hands] 1. Saml. Pape died about 16 years ago and left 3 sons - Saml. Pape now of Whitby whitesmith, Willm. who died about 10 years ago and left 2 children, (a daughter about 20 and son about 18 years), and Peter Pape of Hull, barber aged about 35. Josh. Pape died many years ago in the Army, a bachelor.
