Edward Forbes (1815-1854) grew up on the Isle of Man, where he became a keen naturalist. After attending medical school in Edinburgh, he joined Captain Graves as naturalist to a naval expedition in the Mediterranean, and carried out an intensive dredging programme. On his return to London, Forbes worked at Kings College and the Geological Society, before being appointed Naturalist to the Geological Survey. He returned to Edinburgh as Professor of Natural History in 1854, and died shortly after. Forbes' most important writings were concerned with biogeography and its relation to geological change.
