Bellingham, St Oswald was formerly called Hesleyside as there was a chapel and priests' hiding hole at the old house of the Charltons at Hesleyside. The first known chaplain was Rev. John Donohough in 1741. For a time the mission moved to Tone Hall until 1794, then the chapel was constructed in the roof of some dwelling houses until 1808 when services were resumed at the domestic chapel at Hesleyside. The new church was erected in 1839 by subscription, on a site presented by the late William John Charlton, esq. and opened on 26 June 1839 with Rev. Nicholas Brown as priest. |
