Administrative / biographical background:

Following the Local Government Act of 1894 the parish of Crayford formed part of the Dartford Rural District Council. Under the terms of the Act parishes with a population of over 300 were to have parish councils.

The Crayford Parish Council remained in existance until 1920 when the parish, following its dramatic growth during the First World War, finally secured urban powers after earlier unsuccessful attempts. The Crayford Urban District Council continued until 1965 when, under the terms of the London Government Act of 1963, Crayford became part of the London Borough of Bexley.
