Catalogue description The Howard de Walden Institute was established in 1922 under the auspices of the YWCA, "for the recreation and instruction of young women and girls in Maidstone". The Institute began at 1, Rose Yard, taking over premises formerly occupied by the Blue Triangle Club. It provided instruction in cookery, elocution, dancing and drill. In 1931 it acquired Westborough House, Tonbridge Road, as a ladies' hostel.
