Administrative / biographical background:

Tilton Road Board School opened in 1891 with accommodation for 1070 mixed and infant children. It was enlarged in 1906 and cookery and other centres were added in 1912. The school was reorganised in 1929 into two departments for senior girls and junior and infant children. The Senior Girls Department became a separate school in 1945 [see S197]. The Primary School closed in 1973.
