Administrative / biographical background:

Thomas William Camm worked for Chance Bros & Co. of Smethwick until 1865, when Chance closed down its ornamental department. The following year, with his two brothers, he set up his own business of Camm Bros in Brewery St., Smethwick. He soon needed larger premises and at an unknown date moved to Regent St. In the late 1870s he also had offices at 41 Frederick St., Birmingham.

In about 1882 the business was sold to R.W. Winfield & Co., later known as Winfields Ltd. The Camm Bros records stop at this point. The activities of the three brothers after the sale are not clear. Notes for the purchase agreement suggest that they continued as employees of R.W. Winfield. Thomas William was still working for that company in 1887.

Thomas William reappears in 1888 with his own business, T.W. Camm, having meanwhile acquired a London address. He kept his records in the same volumes as Camm Bros and his business has therefore been treated for listing purposes as its successor.

Thomas William died in 1912 but his business was carried on by his sons and daughter. It closed in about 1960.

Thomas William's brothers also set up a business, Camm & Co. Its records have been listed as BS/CC.
