Administrative / biographical background: |
John Bevill Fortescue, the fourth and youngest son of the Hon George M and Lady Louisa E Fortescue was born at Boconnoc in 1850. He was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford where he read Law. He was called to the Bar in 1875. Rather to the family's surprise, he married Dorothy Hoste in 1891 and inherited the estates at Boconnoc and Dropmore. His mother, Lady Louisa E Fortescue, who had lived at Boconnoc since 1833, moved to Dropmore for the remaining years of her life. Bevill, as he was known in the family, was High Sheriff of Cornwall in 1894 and a JP. There are very few letters from him in the collection. |
