Administrative / biographical background: |
George William Osborn, the grandfather of the depositor, was born in Chelsea in 1844, and was a member of the first London County Council, acting for a time as Chairman of its Roads and Buildings Committee. He moved to Uplands in 1888, and served for 17 years as the first Chairman of the Heathfield Parish Council. In 1899 he was elected as representative for Heathfield on the East Sussex County Council, and remained on the Council for 24 years, being appointed Chairman in 1906. He was a Deputy Lieutenant of the County, and a JP, sitting upon the Hailsham Bench. He was also Vice-President of the Sussex County Territorial Association, and Chairman of the Local War Pensions Committee. He died in November 1924 |
