Administrative / biographical background:

The Dispensary was established in 1832 by resolution of a public meeting. Its first premises were in High Street, Gateshead but in 1855 a building at the corner of Nelson Street and West Street was purchased to replace it. The Dispensary was absorbed by the National Health Service in 1948.
