Of (i) Bargain and Sale Enrolled, 21 April 1757, for the making a tenant for the suffering of several Recoveries; (ii) Exemplification of a Common Recovery, Easter Term 1757; (iii and iv) Settlement by Lease and Release, 27, 28 April 1757, pursuant to several Recoveries. The descriptions of the properties are very full in the documents; the parties to the settlement (no. GOODWOOD/E412) were: (a) Thomas Knight of Godmersham, co. Kent, esq. (formerly Thomas Brodnax, afterwards Thomas May); (b) Thomas Knight, only son and heir of (a); (c) Christopher Hull of Cliffords Inn, London, gent.; (d) John Kirril of Sevenoaks, co. Kent, esq. and John Knowler of the Inner Temple, London, esq.; (e) Thomas Lambard of Sevenoaks, esq. and Jacob Sawbridge of Canterbury, co. Kent, esq. The very involved recital of the uses to which the estates were to be put may be summarized as to (a) for life, then to (d) and (e) as trustees for various uses and terms of years as a jointure for Jane, wife of (a) and dau. of William Monk of Old Shoreham, and to provide portions for their children. The properties comprised in the settlement were:-- Manor and capital messuage of Rawmere; Rawmere, Parsonage, Copyhold, Longford alias Langford, Broadlee, Thrumly and Valdoe Farms; messuage in North Street, Chichester; rectory impropriate of Mid Lavant; all other lands of (a) and (b), or held in trust for them, in Mid Lavant, East Lavant, Westhampnett, Subdeanery or St. Peter the Less Chichester; tithes of Little Dunnow, Great Dunmow, Stebbing, Barnston, Felstead and Great Tey, co. Essex. All late the estate of Sir Thomas May. Addesdean Farm in Westbourne; Earnley Farm, with 240a. arable, pasture, meadow, marsh and wood; messuage, etc. and 60a. land (part of Earnley Farm), and other property in Earnley, Sidlesham and East Wittering. Cobden Manor and Farm, with 450a. land in Sullington and Findon; 5a. pasture in Sullington; Lower Buckhurst Farm and 36a., Steels Farm and 52a., with the tithes thereon, 36a. common and two coppices in Wadhurst. Manors, houses, lands, etc. in Westwell, Little Chart, Hothfield, St. Margaret Rochester, Biddenden and Smarden, co. Kent. Tenement called The Black Boy in Milford Lane, St. Clement Danes; 34 tenements, etc. called Mays Buildings and Little Mays Buildings in St. Martin's Lane and Bedford Bury in St. Martin in the Fields and St. Paul Covent Garden, all in co. Middx. and late the estate of Henry May of the Middle Temple, London. Manors, houses, lands, etc. in Littlebourne, Adisham and Well; house and 150a. land in Mersham and Brabourne; manors, houses, lands, etc. in Boughton Aluph, Wye, Godmersham and Wittersham; all in co. Kent, purchased under the will of Henry May by trustees and settled on (a) and his heirs in tail male. Capital messuage called Forsters and houses and lands in Egham and Thorpe, co. Surrey. Three houses and part of Blackwell Hall in St. Lawrence Jewry between Catt Eaton Street, Guildhall Yard and Blackwell Hall; site of the Sun tavern in St. Bartholomew the Less near the Royal Exchange; all in the City of London. Tenement called the Bear at the foot of London Bridge in St. Olave, Southwark; site of a tenement called the Bell, with a tenement heretofore used as a dye house in St. Saviour Southwark. Manor of Chawton with capital messuage, farms and lands; manor of Alton Eastbrook; manor of Truncheants in Alton; farms and woods in Bentworth, Alton, Chawton and Medstead; all in co. Hants. Manor of Lyminster; messuage and 160a. land called Lyminster Farm; messuage and 116a. land in Lyminster and Arundel; land (not detailed) in Wisborough Green held as part of the demesne of the Manor of Lyminster. Manors, houses, farms and lands in Hyde, Winnall, Chilcomb, Kings Worthy, Easton, Abbots Worthy, Headbourne Worthy, Mortimer and Weeke; manor and advowson of Steventon; manor of Shalden; houses, farms, lands, etc. in Steventon, Shalden, Ash, Overton, Quidhampton and Dean; manor of Neatham, and lands, etc. in Alton, Holybourne, Neatham and Colmer; all in co. Hants. (The Hampshire estate was obtained by exchange with Sir John Peachey, bart.) Capital messuage called Ford Place (the usual residence of (a)) with the Park (420a.), messuages, houses and lands in Godmersham, manors of Ford, Yallons and Halton; woods (246a.) in Godmersham, Boughton Aluph and Wye (see also no. GOODWOOD/E406); manor of Esture and lands belonging in Chilham, Chartham, Waltham and Godmersham; all in co. Kent and late the estate of William Broadnax or purchased by (a) his son. |
