The archives are arranged by Companies existing in 1949 and then in order of foundation
The collections contain minute books, ledgers and lists of shareholders. Generally only the minute books date back to the foundation of the companies, though both Ryde and Ventnor have preserved lists of original shareholders.
The earliest undertaking was at Newport, a gaslight company having been founded there in 1823. Ryde followed in 1838 and the remaining companies at intervals throughout the century.
This collection of documents was deposited with the Isle of Wight Record Office by the Southern Gas Company in 1970.
Administrative / biographical background:
The collection represents an amalgamation of the archives of a number of private gas companies brought together by the nationalization of 1949. Newport, Ryde, Brading, Cowes, East Cowes, Sandown, Ventnor and Shanklin each had its own separate undertaking whose records will be found here.
