Administrative / biographical background: |
In 1836 the building of Amble harbour was commenced. The chairman of the Harbour construction company, the Earl of Newbrough, a descendant of the Radcliffe family, who owned extensive property in & around Amble, insisted that a clause be inserted in the contract for building the harbour, stating that a place of worship for Roman Catholics should be provided within the town. In the early years, the mission was originally served from Longhorsley & then from Alnwick. At this time, the congregation appears to have consisted almost entirely of Irish navvies employed in the construction of the Harbour. After the completion of construction attendance at the Mission began to dwindle. By the 1870's when Broomhill Colliery was under development there was no place of worship in Amble. In 1879 a school chapel was built on land purchased from Charles Leslie, son of Col. Leslie, husband of the Countess of Newbrough, on the site of the old manor house. The mission was supplied from Felton until 1885 when a resident priest was appointed. |
